Buying a Home
Create Your Wish List
This is the time for you to establish your wish list criteria. Decide which features are absolutely essential, "nice" extras if you happen to find them, and which are completely undesirable.
You might want to start with what you like and don't like in your current home or apartment. But keep in mind that this is a "wish list" to help with the search; it is highly unlikely that you will find a home that meets every criteria.
Know What You Can Afford
Use the calculators on this website to get a quick idea of how much home you can comfortably afford.
Check Your Credit Rating
Did you know that you can check your credit scores before you go to the bank? Even if you have perfect credit, it's a good idea to check your credit reports for errors. Note: Your own credit report inquiries will not affect your credit rating.
Credit bureau scores are often called "FICO® scores" because most credit bureau scores used in the US are produced from software developed by Fair Isaac and Company.
FICO scores are provided to lenders by the three major credit reporting agencies:
Equifax
Experian
TransUnionFor a copy of your current FICO scores, go to www.MyFICO.com
Be sure to check out the Credit Education section for an explanation of what goes into calculating your credit score and how to improve your score, if necessary.
Learn About Mortgages
Shopping for the right loan is just as important as choosing the right house. Your challenge is to select the loan terms that are most favorable to your situation. You do not have to do this in a vacuum; your Lender will explain your options in detail.
